Independent individuals make confident decisions about their lives. Being independent means you are living with freedom, productively and with your own decisions. In short, an independent individual is in control of his/her life by being confident of the decisions he/she will be making.

To be truly independent, you'd have to live alone in the woods, build your own shelter, hunt your own food, etc., etc. If you mean an independent person who lives in society, well, then it's the degree of your reliance on other people that establishes you as relatively "independent".
