One of the absolute biggest reasons to have fought in the civil war was to abolish slavery. The second reason was to gain more state rights and lower tariffs. Those were the two main goals of the civil war. But, propaganda is what would really make people want to enlist. The propaganda sometimes guilt tripped people into thinking they needed to help.
