What made Virginia and Maryland successful colonies?

Maybe there was a country who helped them out

They grew tobacco & cotton, had slaves, and gave no cares about the other colonies- it was only what could produces the most income for their colony. Without the slaves labor there was no way that these colonies would've thrived as they did.
