Katie, and her older sister, Lynn, who have a very close bond. Lynn protects and cares for her

little sister, and Katie looks up to Lynn a great deal. An experience where Lynn saved Katie from

a fierce dog by helping her to escape, only to be bit herself and then have Katie turn around and

save her from the dog, is reflected upon. The two girls live with their family in Iowa in the early

1950’s in a little rental house near a cornfield. After the parents’ business, an oriental store, fails

they have to consider moving the family to Georgia, where the girls’ uncle lives and has job

prospects for the mother and father.
