For 2 similar figures, if

linear ratio = a : b , then

area ratio = a² : b²

Here the linear ratio = 8 : 10 = 4 : 5, hence

area ratio = 4² : 5² = 16 : 25

Let x be the area of the smaller figure, then


(x)/(16) =
(100)/(25) ( cross- multiply )

25x = 16 × 100 = 1600 ( divide both sides by 25 )

x = 64

Area of smaller figure = 64 in²
