A recipe for cookies calls for 4 cups of flour, half as much sugar as flour, and half as much butter as sugar. How many cups of butter will you need if you double the recipe?

You will need 2 cups of butter.

Explanation:

There are 2 ways to figure this out.

#1. If you need 4 cups of flour, then you will need 2 cups of sugar.

If you need 2 cups of sugar, then you will need 1 cup of butter.

Which means that if you double the recipe you will need 2 cups of butter.

#2. If you are doubling the recipe, then you will need 8 cups of flour.

Which means you will need 4 cups of sugar.

And you will need 2 cups of butter!
