log3 (12) = 2.2619.

Explanation:

Let y = log3 12

Then by the definition of a logarithm

12 = 3^y

Now because a calculator gives us logs to the base 10 we use these logs:

log 12 = log 3^y

log 12 = y log 3

y = log 12 / log 3

y = 2.2619 to the nearest 10 thousandth.
