Cochlea is a part of the inner ear that is shaped like a snail. . it is a sense organ that translates sound into nerve impulses that is in turn sent to the brain.
A human being has two cochlea one in each ear. They transform the vibrations of the cochlear liquids and associated structures into neural signal.
In other words the cochlea transfers the pressure waves of the sound into nerve impulses, that are then taken by the brain for interpretation.
