Given the 2 equations

x + y = 8 → (1)

2x + y = 2 → (2)

Multiplying (1) by - 1 and adding to (2) will eliminate the y- term

- x - y = - 8 → (3)

Add (2) and (3) term by term to eliminate y, that is

x = - 6

Substitute x = - 6 into either of the 2 equations and evaluate for y

Substituting into (1)

- 6 + y = 8 ( add 6 to both sides )

y = 14

solution is (- 6, 14 )
