I don't know of a way of doing this without using trig. If you find the line going from the end of 9.5 yards to the base (given as 23 yards) in such a way that the line opposite the 85 degree angle meets to base at 90 degrees, then you can find the area.

Givens

<A = 85 degrees

hypotenuse for the right angle triange containing the height = 9.5

base = 23 yards.

Area = opposite side to 85 degrees * base /2

Solution

Side Opposite = Sin(85) * 9.5

Side Opposite = 9.464

Area = base * side opposite / 2

Area = 9 * 9.464 / 2

Area = 42.6 yd^2
