Why was the Ku Klux Klan so popular and powerful?

Because the social hierarchy put whites on top of blacks, therefore making blacks inferior. Because of this deeply ingrained discrimination, the KKK had ties to the government and law enforcement, both of which were corrupt and in favor of whites.
