There is sometimes controversy over who owns the copyright to popular memes as they are usually meant to be shared free but:
• The artist DOESNT always consent to it being shared like that
• The people sharing the meme do not like it being shared by others
• they are made with art that is stolen from copy righted work
• there are no legal rules to stop anyone from claiming ownership
