Which natural resource became the chief source of fuel in the Industrial Revolution?

During the first industrial revolution, it was coal due to the besmur process. Due to this process, you could smelt pig iron (with coal) and make iron very quickly. During the second industrial revolution, steel because it was needed to make railroads.
