People tend to turn on the news when they're personally affected by the economic state of the country such as during a recession. This increases the audience of news coverage.
Some topics may also not be covered as much due to economic/market relationships. For example, if the United States is economically connected to another country, news coverage of that country might not be as harsh in order to preserve the economic relationship.
