The absolute value always returns a positive result, however the expression inside can be positive or negative, that is

4x - 1 = 7 OR 4x - 1 = - 7

4x - 1 = 7 ( add 1 to both sides )

4x = 8 ( divide both sides by 4 )

x = 2

OR

4x - 1 = - 7 ( add 1 to both sides )

4x = - 6 ( divide both sides by 4 )

x =
(-6)/(4) = -
(3)/(2) = - 1.5

Solutions are x = - 1.5 or x = 2
