Why did plantation owners punish enslaved people

If it wasn't done to the slave owners like they would punish the slaves until done right, it was more of a beating then punishment, if their was a mess up anywhere they would be beaten with a belt, whip, or a stick

Normally such punishment was used to force them to work, but the lash was also employed for a range of offences
