Ammonia is a base because, when it is dissolved in water it forms an hydroxide ion, which is highly unstable and when performed with test will show all results for basic nature.

Answer: Ammonia is a base but it does not contain any hydroxyl group in its formula. It is a base because when it reacts with water, it really is hydroxyl ions which proves that it is a base. It is basic in nature. It turns red litmus paper into blue. It is colourless compound.
The formula of ammonia is NH3 but when water reacts with Ammonia then it will turns into Ammonium Hydroxide is NH4OH.
