ANSWER- Mary McLeod Bethune was a child of former slaves. Bethune founded the Daytona Normal and Industrial Institute in 1904, which later became Bethune-Cookman College. Mary McLeod Bethune was born on July 10, 1875, in Mayesville, South Carolina. Mary McLeod Bethune was also an educator and activist. She is known for being the only African American woman at the United Nations Charter conference.
