Pants require nitrogen to grow, usually in the form of nitrates.

Plants also convert light, water, and CARBON DIOXIDE into sugar and OXYGEN.

Basically if you don’t have nitrogen to feed the plants, these other cycles like oxygen and carbon cannot complete themselves
