Water storage; deciduous. Deciduous trees roots are not able to grow after 32° and the minimum root growth temperatures are believed to be between 32°-41°. In harsh cold temperature roots tend to freeze if the soil does not form a sort of ice shell to protect them. The roots enlarge in order to be able to absorb more water before the coming spring.
