Brian's Winter is written by Gary Paulsen about a teenage boy's survival in wildness in rural Canada after a plane crash. Dark Places is written by Gillian Flynn about a teenage girl surviving a cult massacre at her home in rural America and her later investigation of the case.

both are about survival in a rural setting n followed the main character during a very difficult time. both characters could have died during that time but survived.

They both take place in a materialistic era where survival is the key to living as both take place in a very useful yet dangerous environment with two Males plotting to try and escape but survive at the same time.
