Indeed, like in all the other European colonized territories, diseases for which the autochthonous population had no immunity devastated their populations. 50% of aboriginals were decimated by smallpox and as aboriginals fled into the inner territories they carried the viruses with them, further spreading the diseases.

Consequently, this led to starvation as the ablest members of the tribes were dead and the young and the old survivors did not have the training or the experience to hunt or collect food.
