Xenia is the Greek tradition of hospitality practices between a guest (esp. bringing a gift) and host (esp. providing the gift of shelter and/or food) with both displaying appreciation and respect for the other.

It was an important idea to the Greeks who wanted to please their gods. Just in case one was interacting with one of the gods, as either a guest or host, it was important to leave a good impression.
