What is the purpose of NASA and why is it important?

The purpose od NASA was to get America in the moon 1st during the space race in thw 1960's. It is important because it was so successful that it is still a running program today. Americans (we) still use the program to explore space and understand our universe and galaxy. NASA helped keep the Russans and Americans from starting a war.
