How does the author create surprise in this myth?

The author sets up the expectation that Dionysius will execute Damon, but it does not happen.

The author foreshadows that Pythias will return, and he does.

The author presents Damon as a friend willing to risk his life for Pythias, but he backs out of his promise.

The author introduces the character Pythias but immediately sends him away.

‘The author presents Damon as a friend willing to risk his life for Pythias, but he backs out of his promise’ for me this have more impact of surprise than the other choices because betrayal of a character that we thought we are sure of really delivers a lot more emotions.

However, the first choice can also be a possible answer; though it can be more expected since we can easily see the probabilities for it to occur.
