During the period of westward expansion leading up to the Civil War, the other predominant industry employing working was mining. The Gold Rush brought settlers out by the thousands, and many were willing to take a chance on getting rich quick; however, it wouldn't be long before companies began to purchase claims on large tracts of land to increase their likelihood of finding gold, and those operations employed many who couldn't afford to mine a claim for themselves.
