The first problem Queen Elizabeth I had to solve was the fact that she did not have heirs so the Tudor name could take on the crown. The only way for her to solve this problem was through marriage, but she refused to marry anyone. She used her possible marriage to obtain possible alliances with countries that wanted to marry her.

When she died King James VI of Scotland ascended to the throne uniting England and Scotland under a single British monarch.
