Ethanol was used as a blank to factor the amount of light absorbed by the solvent in the ethanol-chlorophyll solution.
By using a blank, the spectrophotometer is calibrated to zero, prior to measuring the chlorophyll solution. This "subtracts" the light absorption of the ethanol so that only the chlorophyll light absorption will be measured.
