Why do chlorine and sodium bond so easily with one another?

They combine as atoms, and separate as ions. The sodium (Na) atom transfers one electron to the chlorine (Cl) atom, so that they both have full outer shells.

They both need to gain/lose the same number of electrons to gain a full outer shell.
