Why did european nations have to trade silver in exchange for Chinese goods for centuries ​

China was in high demand for silver and that's all they really wanted, they used it to make their curreny. (Extra Info: But they eventually had so much silver that there was inflation and this is one of the causes of China's collaspe.)
