The control of North Africa was vital for allies because the North African Campaign of the Second World War was extremely important because they needed to control the Suez Canal to obtain oil from the oil fields in the Persian Gulf and the Middle East. The Suez Canal provided Britain with a shorter sea route to the oilfields as oil grew in importance to the war thus Britain was committed to protect the canal.
