In what why did Robert e lee differ from Ulysses s grant?

Robert E. Lee was a defensive general and his cause for fighting for the Confederacy was to protect his home state Virginia. While Grant was an aggressive general, and his cause for fighting for the union was that he believed that the North and the South should be unified.
