The answer is A. The theme is the underlying message. When an author writes a story, they usually have a message that they are trying to convey. This is the theme. Even though a theme that your english teacher brings up may not be what the author intended to teach, it is still a theme. If it is a lesson or a statement about life, it is a theme.
