Why might it be useful to determine the elements that a planet or moon is made up of?

To determine the element on the planet, the rock is picked up from the planet. It might be helpful in determining the atmosphere of the planet. Like the moon has no atmosphere. By knowing the composition of the planet, one is able to look out the possibility of life on the planet
