Action potentials created by the ganglion cells travel down nerve fibers, which assemble to form the optic nerve.

Retinal ganglion cells are neurons in the retina of the eye which receive visual information from photoreceptors. The function of these cells is to transmit visual information from the retina in the form of action potential to several regions in the brain (e.g. thalamus and hypothalamus).

The long axons of the ganglion cells extends and form the optic nerve, optic chiasm, and optic tract.
