Toussaint L’Ouverture was a leader of the HaitianRevolution. In 1800 Saint-Domingue (modern-day Haiti) was the most prosperous French slave colony of the time. His Revolution helped Saint-Domingue to become the first free colonial society to have explicitly rejected race as the basis of social ranking.

Many African Americans cited Louverture as how to achieve freedom.
