Give evidence to show that slaves developed a separate, unique culture. What circumstance made this possible?

Slaves were allowed to keep some of their old traditions passed down through their ancestors. Over time there were no real Africans left in America. As a result the slaves mixed Christianity in with their culture to form unique traditions.
