Besides being a poignant Bob Marley song, Buffalo Soldiers were African-American U.S. Cavalry soldiers who helped to police western territories. Some legends hold that the name was given to the troops by Indians who questioned their appearance, but more credible scholarship says the name was given to them by Cheyenne warriors who equated their bravery and fighting ability with those of the buffalo.
