“As I said these things I got scared.” “It felt like worms and toads and slimy things crawling out of my chest.” “This awful side of me had surfaced, at last.”

In this excerpt the narrator is dealing with the internal conflict of how she feels about her mother at this point. She says ugly things to her mom and isn't happy with it. We first see her struggle with the ugliness of her words when she states that "I got scared". This development of the conflict continues when she describes the words as "worms and toads and slimy things". She then acknowledges this change or displeasure with herself when she says "This awful side of me had surfaced."
