According to his personal notes he wanted to “put a tag of shame on the greedy bas tards who were responsible for the great depression and the socioeconomic hardships it inflicted on the working classes”. He definitely want the novel to seriously disturb the reader in order to denounce the industrialists and bankers that caused the Great Depression.
