In the text Odysseus says "I wished to see the caveman". It shows that he is curious about the Cyclops and wants to see what kind of man lives in the cave with the large cheeses and flock of sheep. We also know that Odysseus is hoping to get something from the Cyclops because he also wishes to see "what he had to offer". It is common practice in Odysseus' culture to give travelers food and gifts as a ways to show hospitality.
