During the Spanish-American War, after the U.S. ships reached the waters outside of Santiago, a conference of military leaders was met, where one of the Cuban generals, Calixto Garcia, suggested that Shafter's troops captured Daquirí before marching to Santiago. Two days later, the plan was executed and Daquirí was bombarded by the U.S. Navy.
