Why did the Confederates want the Southwest

The Confederacy was interested in the Southwest as a potential area of expansion for the institution of slavery.

The general sense was that the Southwest was open or agnostic to the institution of slavery while also being rich in minerals. While cotton farming was on its way out, the Confederacy believed they could keep slavery alive in the Southwest.
