James Oglethorpe was granted a charter for the colony of Georgia so that it could become a haven for debtors free of rum and slaves and other things that might get in the way of a Utopian society.

This did not last long and Georgia quickly moved past its utopian ideals to become just another colony full of slaves and rum.
