What is the octet rule?

The octet rule says that atoms need to have full valence shells to become stable.

  • Most atoms need eight electrons to fill their valence shells.
  • Hydrogen and helium atoms need only two electrons to fill their valence shells.
  • Atoms that don't have full valence shells form chemical bonds with other atoms to fill their valence shells and satisfy the octet rule.
  • Chemical bonds are forces that hold atoms together.
  • A force is a push or pull on an object.

Hope this helps you!

Have a great day! :)

The Octet rule is a general rule of thumb that applies to most atoms. Basically, it states that every atom wants to have eight valence electrons in its outermost electron shell.
