Anthony is making a collage for his art class by picking shapes randomly. He has five squares, two triangles, two ovals, and four circles. Find P(a square is not chosen first).

Total number of shapes = 5 (squares) + 2( triangles) + 2 (ovals) + 4 (circles)

= 13 shapes

P (of a choosing a square first) is given as =

\frac{Number of favorable outcomes}{total number of outcomes}

= 5/13

Therefore , 5/13 is the probability that a square shape is picked first.

Now, we know, probability , P + P' = 1

where P is the probability of happening any event.

& P' is the probability of that event not happening.

So, to find the probability of not picking up the square shape first, we do : 1 - {5/13} = 8/13

Therefore , 8/13 is the probability that a square shape is NOT picked first.
