In biology 1, a substrate 2 is the top on which an organism (such as a plant, fungus or animal) is living. A substrate 2 can cover biotic 3 or abiotic materials and animals. For example, encrusting algae 4 that lives on a great stone (its substrate 2) can be itself a substrate 2 for an animal that lives on top of the algae 4
