The poem was written by African American author Langston Hughes in 1920, when he was 17 years old, on his way to pay a visit to his father that was in Mexico. He wrote the poem in free verse when he was crossing the Mississippi River.

Langston Hughes (1902-1967) was an author and social activist, better known as the leader of the movement called the Harlem Renaissance.
