Both committed serious sin by having sex outside of marriage, had a brief relationship as a result of both physical and spiritual attraction, had a daughter named Pearl, both decided to keep silence about the name of Pearl's father, despite the fact that Hester was condemned and exposed to public humiliation, she never revealed in the name of Arthur Dimmesdale so as not to damage his image as an irreproachable Protestant pastor.
