How does rock become soil?

Rocks at Earth's surface are attacked by rain and wind. They are also attacked by ice. Pieces of rock are broken off. This is called weathering. it happens over thousands of years.

There are two main ways in which rock breaks down to form soil:

Physical weathering

Chemical weathering
